Board of Directors Job Descriptions

Requirements for All Elected Positions

  • Membership in NASW.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to NASW and the Washington State Chapter.
  • Availability to fulfill the duties of the office for a two-year term unless indicated otherwise.
  • Attend all Board meetings.

All Chapter elected terms run from July 1 through June 30.

JOB TITLE: CHAPTER PRESIDENT

The President is the presiding officer of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee and an ex-officio member of all committee, represents the Board of Directors between its meetings and reports to the Board of Directors all-important interim actions.

Responsibilities

1. Presides at all meetings of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

2. Works with the Board to assure the fulfillment of duties of the Board as designated by the Chapter by-laws.

3. Is available for consultation and assistance to Chapter staff, and is the primary supervisor of the Chapter Executive Director and provides an annual review of Chapter Executive Director per guidelines set by the Personnel Committee.

4. Appoints Board members and officers to interim task forces, sub-committees or special assignments as needed or requested by the Board.

5. Submits a report at all Board meetings.

6. Appoints Chairs of all Committees, Task Forces and other designated groups as required.

7. Represents the Chapter in attendance at national, regional and statewide meetings, including Annual Leadership meeting and Delegate Assembly.

8. Acts as a consultant to the Chair of all Chapter Committees as needed.

9. Reviews adjudication cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, assures compliance with NASW procedures, and plans and implements recommendations contained in final report.

JOB TITLE: PRESIDENT-ELECT

The President Elect serves as an identified NASW elected Board member and is elected one year in advance of assuming the duties of the office. This person is a voting member of the Board, is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Serves as an apprentice to the office of President for one year before taking office of President.

2. Fulfills all of the duties of the President in the event of absence or disability of the President.

3. Attends all meetings of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee.

4. Serves on Chapter committees as assigned by the President.

5. Represents the Chapter in attendance at national, regional and statewide meetings as assigned by the President.

6. Assists the President with adjudicated cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, helps in assuring compliance with NASW procedures, helps in planning and implementing recommendations in final report, and monitors cases as assigned by the President.

JOB TITLE: VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION

The Vice President of Communication and Marketing serves is a voting member of the Board and is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Provides oversight of the Communication and Media, Marketing and Award Committees.

2. Provides consultation to the chairpersons of the above groups as appropriate.

3. Provides an effective communications link between the Board of Directors and these committees with a quarterly report of their activities.

4. Assures that the planning and implementation of programs and activities of the above groups are coordinated and are consistent with the Chapter's strategic plan, policies and procedures.

5. Recommends candidates for Committee appointments.

6. Represents the Chapter in attendance at national, regional and statewide meetings as assigned by the President.

7. Reviews adjudicated cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, helps assure compliance with NASW procedures, helps in planning and implementing recommendations in final report, and monitors cases as assigned by the President.

JOB TITLE: VICE PRESIDENT OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ACTION

The Vice President Social and Political Action is a voting member of the Board and is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Provides oversight of the Legislative Action Committee (LAC), Political Action for Candidate Election (PACE) and Lobby Day and seeks to establish active legislative groups in all areas of the state.

2. Provides consultation to the chairpersons of the above groups.

3. Provides an effective communications link between the Board of Directors and the above groups with a quarterly report of their activities.

4. Assures that the planning and implementation of programs and activities of the above groups are coordinated and are consistent with the Chapter's strategic plan, policies and procedures.

5. Recommends candidates for Committee appointments.

6. Represents the Chapter in attendance at national, regional and statewide meetings as assigned by the President

7. Reviews adjudicated cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, helps assure compliance with NASW procedures, helps in planning and implementing recommendations in final report, and monitors cases as assigned by the President.

The Vice President of Professional Development is a voting member of the Board and is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Provides oversight of the Professional Development Committee and the Annual Conference Committee.

2. Provides consultation to the chairpersons of the above groups.

3. Provides an effective communications link between the Board of Directors and the above groups with a quarterly report of their activities.

4. Assures that the planning and implementation of programs and activities of the above groups are coordinated and are consistent with the Chapter's strategic plan, policies and procedures.

5. Recommends candidates for Committee appointments.

JOB TITLE: VICE PRESIDENT OF DIVERSITY

The Vice President of Diversity is a voting member of the Board and is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Provides oversight of the Committee on Diversity and is the Chair of this Committee.

2. Provides recommendations to the Board on policy, legislation, programs, coalitions regarding issues of diversity and cultural competence.

3. Develops workshops and/or trainings on diversity for the Board and members.

4. Recommends persons of color and other individuals from under represented and diverse groups and populations to the NLIC Committee for Chapter elections and to the President for appointments to other positions and helps the Board insure equal representation.

5. Prepares a quarterly written report of plans/activities to the Board of Directors.

6. Reviews adjudicated cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, helps assure compliance with NASW procedures, helps in planning and implementing recommendations in final report, and monitors cases as assigned by the President.

JOB TITLE: TREASURER

The Treasurer is a voting member of the Board and is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Oversees financial planning for the Chapter, including development of financial policy for Board approval, prepares the annual budget with assistance from staff, secures the annual audit, and develops long-range plans for Chapter savings. Consults with Chapter staff on financial matters.

2. Monitors Chapter fiscal policies to ensure compliance with National standards.

3. Provides financial reports to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee on a quarterly basis.

4. Chairs Chapter Finance Committee or any other committee established to develop fiscal policies and procedures.

5. Reviews adjudicated cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, helps assure compliance with NASW procedures, helps in planning and implementing recommendations in final report, and monitors cases as assigned by the President.

Qualifications

Knowledge of and experience in financial aspects of nonprofit organizations.

The Treasurer Elect is a voting member of the Board and is a member of the Executive Committee and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Serves as an apprentice to the office of Treasurer for one year before assuming a two-year term.

JOB TITLE: SECRETARY

The Secretary is a voting member of the Board and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Records minutes at all Board and Executive Committee meetings and other meetings as assigned.

2. Maintains order of all non-fiscal records of the Chapter.

3. Serves as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and Regional Representatives to insure that Regional programs are developed and implemented in a fashion consistent with the Chapter’s strategic plan, policies and procedures of the Association.

4. Represents the Chapter in attendance at national, regional and statewide meetings as assigned by the President.

5. Reviews adjudicated cases of the Chapter Professional Review Committee, helps assure compliance with NASW procedures, helps in planning and implementing recommendations in final report, and monitors cases as assigned by the President.

JOB TITLE: REGION REPRESENTATIVE

The Region Representative is elected for one year and is a voting member of the Board and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Communicates with members in their respective Regions.

2. Advances the functioning of Regions and the development of District leadership and activities.

3. Provides leadership to the development of Districts within the Regions.

4. Recommends candidates to the NLIC Committee for Chapter elections candidates to the President for Committee appointments.

5. Prepares and delivers a written quarterly report of plans/activities to the Board of Directors.

6. Participates in committees and other activities when appointed by the President.

JOB TITLE: MSW STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

The MSW Student Representative serves a one-year term on the Board of Directors, is a voting member of the Board and participates in the decision making process.

Responsibilities

1. Serves as the representative for all MSW students in the state assuring adequate flow of information from the Chapter and Board to identified Student District Chairs at each campus.

2. Communicates with the Board Representative in the Region in which the student goes to school.

3. Provides quarterly reports to the Board.

4. Recruits students and faculty to write articles for the Currents.

5. Helps to identify student members with leadership interest or potential for the Chapter Nominations and Leadership Identification Committee (NLIC).

6. Communicates with the identified faculty liaisons in the school at which the student attends.

4. Recruits students and faculty to write articles for the Currents.

5. Helps to identify student members with leadership interest or potential for the Chapter Nominations and Leadership Identification Committee (NLIC).

6. Communicates with the identified faculty liaisons in the school at which the student attends.
