Overview of Responsibility for Committee on Diversity

Authorization and Accountability

Each member on the Committee on Diversity serves as an identified NASW elected Committee member and fills a two year term in office (with one-half of the positions elected in 2002 to a one year term); attends all meetings of the Committee on Diversity and participates in the decision making process. The Committee Chair reports to the Vice President of Diversity who is a member of the Board. The Chair is elected from the Committee by the Committee members. All Chapter elected terms run from July 1 through June 30.

Responsibilities
The Committee is responsible for the development of programs, activities, policy and leadership identification that pertain to the mission and goals of this committee.

Mission Statement for Committee on Diversity
“The Board of Directors and the Chapter's Committee on Diversity will lead the Washington State Chapter of NASW to embrace and support diversity within its organization and to ensure that membership, programs and governing structure are inclusive. The Chapter will actively recognize and value the uniqueness of all groups. We are committed to the development of culturally competent practice, political advocacy and social justice for communities/populations served by the profession.�

Activities

1. Provides recommendations to the Board on policy, legislation, programs, coalitions regarding issues of diversity and cultural competence.

2. Develops workshops and/or trainings on diversity for the Board and members.

3. Recommends persons of color and other individuals from under represented and diverse groups and populations to the NLIC Committee for Chapter elections and to the President for appointments to other positions.

4. Prepares a quarterly written report of plans/activities to the Board of Directors.

Qualifications

• Membership in NASW (elected positions only).

• Commitment to NASW, the profession of social work, the inclusion of diversity in its programs and membership.
