Workshop Description:

The micro, macro, and mezzo level discrimination transgender and gender non- conforming people face creates harm to psychological and social health. There is expanding research which recommends a set of best practices inclusive of service delivery, organizational practices, and research design which better serves transgender and gender non-conforming consumers. This training is meant to be a foundational, practice-based introduction which encourages clinicians to provide a more inclusive environment for people, regardless of where they are on the gender spectrum. Service providers of all levels in professional career as well as personal identities are encouraged to attend. This interactive training day will consist of didactics with powerpoint slides, videos, small group activity, large group discussion and independent activities.

Course Outline: Introduction to Gender Identity

· Definition of terms

· Gender in the brain: review of research

· Assessment of gender dysphoria over the lifespan

· Addressing minority stress

· Common reactions of parents and caregivers

· Current standards of care

· How to write supportive letters for medical treatment

· Navigating transference and counter-transference

· Integrating an anti-oppression lens

· Welcoming clients: paperwork and protocols

About the Presenter: 

Dr. Matt Goldenberg, PsyD is a Licensed Psychologist specializing in affirmative care for transgender and gender diverse individuals based in Olympia, WA.  A popular trainer, Matt works as a teacher, clinician, and organizational consultant. Matt received a Master of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis on Existential- Phenomenology from Seattle University in 2008.  Matt also completed his Doctorate of Clinical Psychology from the Wright Institute, a program accredited by the American Psychological Association in 2013.
